Drug driver arrested - Hitchin

Yesterday evening officers from the North Herts Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) proactively stopped a driver on Grove Road, Hitchin, suspecting he was a drug user he was detained under the Misuse of Drugs act to search both him and the vehicle he had been driving.

With some assistance from colleagues in our Roads Policing Unit (RPU) he was also required to provide a sample of saliva for a roadside drugs test that tests for the presence of cocaine and cannabis, he failed as cocaine was detected, arrested and taken to custody.

It’s illegal to drive if either:

  • you’re unfit to do so because you’re on legal or illegal drugs

  • you have certain levels of illegal drugs in your blood (even if they have not affected your driving)

  • If you’re convicted of drug driving you may get:

  • a minimum 1 year driving ban

  • an unlimited fine

  • up to 6 months in prison

  • a criminal record

  • Your driving licence will also show you’ve been convicted for drug driving. This will last for 11 years.
