Safer Streets: Man arrested on suspicion of bike theft

Officers carrying out patrols in the Safer Streets area of Hatfield have arrested a man on suspicion of bike theft and other offences.

The Welwyn Hatfield Neighbourhood Policing Team arrested a 39 year old man in Goldings Crescent on suspicion of theft of a pedal cycle and going equipped for stealing. Tools were seized.

A police officer was injured during the arrest and the man, who is from Hatfield, was further arrested on suspicion of obstructing a police officer and assault (ABH). He is currently on bail while an investigation is carried out.

Welwyn Hatfield Chief Inspector Pete Frost said: “The Safer Streets project is proving successful as we’ve seen a sharp decrease in crime across the area. We will not be complacent though and we continue to carry out patrols.

“A bike, which we believe to be stolen, was recovered during the arrest and we are releasing an image of it. If you think it is yours, please get in touch quoting ISR 363 of 25 February.

“Bike theft is a frustrating crime for cyclists but there a lots of steps you can take to protect your bike. First of all, make sure it is registered at bikeregister.com. This is national database which helps to reunite cyclist with their lost or stolen bike. It is also a good idea to get your bike security-marked. The Neighbourhood Policing Team regularly host free bike-marking events so please keep an eye out on socials for our next event. We have lots more practical tips on our website at herts.police.uk/crimeprevention.

“I would also like to remind resident of the importance of reporting intelligence around bike theft. This includes reporting when your bike is stolen or if you believe stolen bikes are being sold. I also want to make clear that handling stolen goods is an offence. If you are being offered a bike for sale under unusual circumstances, do not buy the bike and report it to us instead.”
