Hi, Yesterday afternoon St Albans Neighbourhood Team dealt with an incident of attempted theft where two males tried to distract a male who had recently got money out of the bank. The distraction technique used was squirting mustard on the back of his jacket, giving the males an opportunity to help clean it off and trying to remove his jacket. Fortunately, this was picked up quickly by our CCTV controllers and Police intervened and there was no theft.
Although this is a very rare incident within St Albans, we are reminding people to be vigilant with personal belongings whilst in the city centre, especially during busy times at weekends and market days. Please also be cautious when taking money out of the bank or cash machines.
Please consider -Keeping wallets and personal belongings zipped up and close to you. -Attach wallets to bags with a lanyard -Keep bags and rucksacks zipped up -Being warry of your surroundings -Reporting any suspicious incidents to the police on 101/999 or security guards. - ‘Airtags’ or GPS Tagging devices attached to wallets and keys.
