Officers tackling dangerous parking on school run

The Welwyn Hatfield Neighbourhood Policing Team are carrying out patrols to tackle dangerous parking on the school run in south Hatfield.

Patrols will be carried out in Northdown Road and Travellers Lane following concerns about dangerous and anti-social parking.

Officers will be speaking with drivers and reminding them that they should not park on the following:

  • yellow zig zag markings
  • double yellow lines
  • single yellow lines during restricted hours
  • footpaths
  • They should also not park within 10 metres of a junction as this decreases visibility.

Drivers must not block driveways or dropped kerbs and they should not drive on footpaths either.

PC Diana Vickers, from the Welwyn Hatfield Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We know this is an issue causing real concern and we working closely with the local school and taking action. Signage has been installed in the area to remind drivers of their responsibilities and we will be speaking face-to-face with drivers to ensure that the message is understood.

“It is everybody’s responsibility to park safely. We appreciate drivers are usually in a rush on the school run but it should be no excuse for putting the lives of littles one in danger. Anti-social parking also has an impact on residents living nearby.

“Our patrols will have an educational focus until the end of the term and we will be back again in September with an enforcement operation. Drivers who have not taken on board our advice may well find themselves with a fixed penalty notice or a community protection warning.”
