Theft from Motor Vehicle

Dear Resident

 

Between 21:00 on Tuesday 10th June and 09:00 on Wednesday 11th June a theft from a vehicle occurred on The Causeway in Buntingford.

 

A resident has parked his vehicle at 21:00 on The Causeway in Buntingford and left it locked and secure. He has returned to it the following morning to discover that both front and rear number plates have been removed. 

Stolen number plates are often used on other vehicles in order to commit crime e.g. theft of fuel from petrol stations or to avoid charges such as ULEZ in London or tolls etc. If you are also a victim of this type of crime please report to Police immediately so that you obtain a crime number to combat any charges etc that you could receive.

Tips to prevent vehicle crime:

  • Ensure you lock doors and shut windows/sunroof when leaving your vehicle unattended.
  • Always remove keys from the ignition when you are not with the vehicle
  • When parking, remember to set your immobiliser or alarm or use an approved steering lock or gear lever clamp.
  • Never leave valuables in your vehicle – not even in the glove box or boot – and keep all possessions out of sight – even coats, sunglasses and carrier bags.
  • Remove your satnav and holder and wipe away suction marks which could indicate that a satnav is stored in your vehicle.
  • Be aware of your keys.  Don’t leave them lying around, visible or in pockets in changing rooms where they could be taken.  Don’t leave them visible on a windowsill or near to your front door, where they could be “hooked” through the letterbox. 
  • Register your valuables on www.immobilise.com.
  • Store car ownership documents at home, not in your car.
  • Secure number plates with anti-theft screws.
