Special Constabulary Update

Dear Resident

Last month, officers from our Special Constabulary made nine arrests and gave more than 2,000 hours of their time responding to incidents across the county.

Our voluntary police officers also:

• Assisted with 33 arrests

• Searched for 17 people who had been reported missing

• Attended 35 community events

• Conducted 10 warrant enquires

• Recovered two stolen vehicles in one shift

• Completed 40 moving vehicle stops

• Issued 16 Traffic Offence Reports

• Seized nine vehicles

Shift highlights included a joint operation conducted by our Operational Support Team (OST) with Special Constables in the Metropolitan Police and Thames Valley Police targeting the use of two-wheeled vehicles for illicit drug and weapon transportation and acquisitive crime across county borders.

OST are experienced Special Constables who have completed specialist training including method of entry and public order and can be deployed across the county.

They also made an arrest following a burglary in a neighbouring police force area. Officers identified and stopped a vehicle of interest which was driving through Hemel Hempstead. After they conducted further checks, the driver was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and the vehicle was forensically seized as part of the investigation.

Two Specials helped at the scene of a road traffic collision whilst off-duty. While the officers were tending to the drivers, one eagle-eyed Special Constable recognised a man who was wanted, called the Force Communications Room to pass on the information and waited for officers to arrive which resulted in an arrest.

A number of Specials supported the County Cadet Competition at the end of the month which was a fun day for all. This was a great opportunity to talk with the cadets and share the opportunity to join the Special Constabulary family in the future.

A Special Constable is a part-time, voluntary police officer with all the same powers as regular police officers. They are highly trained and play an essential role in preventing, reducing and tackling crime and keeping the communities of Hertfordshire safe.
