Witness appeal following motorcycle thefts

Dear Resident

Detectives are appealing for witnesses and information following a spate of motorcycle thefts in Broxbourne.

Since 1 May 2025 there have been 27 reports of thefts of motorbikes in the borough with five bikes taken in the last seven days.

Detective Inspector Neil Watts, of the Local Crime Unit, said: “These targeted thefts have seen bikes taken from across the borough.

“We have increased patrols and have recovered a number of stolen bikes which have been returned to their owners.

“If you own a bike, please consider some of the crime prevention advice below to help stop you becoming a victim of crime.

“Also, if you have information about motorbike thefts in the borough we would like to hear from you.”

You can report information online at herts.police.uk/report, speak to an operator in our Force Communications Room via our online web chat at herts.police.uk/contact or call the non-emergency number 101.

Alternatively, you can stay 100% anonymous by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via their untraceable online form at crimestoppers-uk.org.

Tips to increase motorcycle security:

  • Try to use a designated motorcycle parking place with a stand and security loop.
  • Keep your bike locked away in a garage where possible.
  • Always lock your bike to something secure – at home, fit special attachments such as ground loops to lock your bike to.
  • Use a motorbike cover – don’t advertise what you’ve got.
  • Have the motorbike security marked with its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
  • Check with your insurance company – they may offer insurance discounts for certain security measures.
  • When purchasing security devices, make sure they are either Thatcham or Sold Secure approved.
  • Never leave helmets or other possessions with your bike.
  • Try to park where there’s CCTV.
  • If you ride an off-road bike, ask the DVLA to register its details (frame and engine numbers) on their own and police computers. It’s free.
  • For security products for your scooter, motorcycle or moped search the ‘Accredited products’ page on www.securedbydesign.com (a police-approved website).
  • Further crime prevention advice can be found below or on our website www.herts.police.uk.
