Local Priorities Anti Social Behaviour Weekly Update

I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Anti Social Behaviour, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey.

During this week, we have completed various engagements and events in town as well as gathering some great results responding to jobs and calls made by members of the public.

This week, the following has been achieved;
X4 arrests.
X8 E-scooters seized.

Vagrancy patrols under operation Urban have been conducted throughout both Queensway and The Forum on the 31st of July. In doing these patrols, we have identified three homeless people, all of which have fallen on tough times. We have offered support to them as well as signposted them to relevant agencies that can help with their situation and further tailored vagrant patrols will be conducted within the following weeks to help those in need.

Police have attended the Geek Retreat on the 2nd of August as a community engagement with youths who come to the town on a regular basis. The children there were teaching us how to play Pokémon, which was as confusing as it was fun. We massively enjoyed our time there and thank Geek Retreat for their unwavering hospitality.

Operation Hotspot patrols are still being conducted in and around the town centre in order to reduce anti-social behaviour and crime. We are getting some great results from this and aim to increase officer presence in the area. This is an on-going operation and will continue for the foreseeable future.

We have also attended multiple smaller/independent businesses in the town to sign them up to Herts Connected. We would like to invite these businesses to future community engagements as well as encourage them to report any issues they may come across in town. The feedback given will help us Police the town more effectively and tackle the issues that get reported to us. We encourage those using Herts Connected to provide any feedback so that we may tailor our response to crime accordingly.

There have been many in person reports over several months surrounding pedal cycles being used in town. We understand that this is a concern for members of the public, and Police have been tackling the situation. Around the perimeter in town, there are twenty-seven No Cycling signs which make it clear that the town is a no cycling zone. We will be enforcing this and making sure that riders will walk their bikes through the town centre.

We will continue to update you weekly regarding the safer town centre initiative and the results made by Police.

Tackling antisocial behaviour can be a complex issue, and one which requires input and action from more than just the police.

The Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 aims to put victims first, giving power to local people and enabling professionals to find the best solutions for their local area.

The act provides the police, local authorities and other local agencies with flexible tools and powers that they can use to respond quickly and effectively to antisocial behaviour.

These include:

  • civil injunctions.
  • criminal behaviour orders.
  • public spaces protection orders.
  • community protection notices.
  • dispersal powers.
  • closure powers.

The act also includes measures such as the Community Remedy and antisocial behaviour case reviews which empower victims and communities to have a say in the outcome of their reports and hold agencies to account.

If you ever experience this issue or have information regarding an incident, please report it using our online reporting tools at https://www.herts.police.uk, speak to an operator in our Force Communications Room via our online web chat or call the non-emergency number 101.

Alternatively, you can stay 100 per cent anonymous by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via their untraceable online form at crimestoppers-uk.org.
