Here are some things common hallmarks to help identify Counterfeit Currency:

  • Pound Notes issued from a Scottish Bank. These are not officially legal tender but have a specific status.
  • £50 Notes are also a commonly used note for fraudulent payments
  • Difference in Size from usual notes.
  • Lack of Holograms or difference in placement or type of images placed on the Hologram i.e. Portrait of Monarch difference
  • Text on the note is blurry or smudged
  • The feel of the note is different either being more paper-like or smooth that the usual plastic, this extends to when you bend the note and thickness.
  • Asking for exchange or change from a large value note i.e. “I only have a £50” or “Can I exchange smaller notes for £100”.
  • All notes (if you receive multiple) provided have the same serial number
  •

Not all Counterfeit Notes will bear all of the above signs but may have one or more. Remember your rights to refuse service or specific notes or speak to a manager if you suspect counterfeit currency.
